About the release

A$AP Rocky has been working with PUMA for two years now — most recently as the brand's creative director of F1 — but he's never before touched the Suede, PUMA's most enduring silhouette. That changes with the PUMA x A$AP Rocky Suede '94 — a faithful revival of the 1994 archive version, a grail-status build that PUMA hasn't reissued since its original run. Style code 408735-01.

The 1994 Suede holds a specific place among collectors. It's the only Suede with the full retro PUMA logo printed directly onto the quarter panel, alongside a longer toe box, heavily padded raw-edge tongue, slimmer tooling and the original woven tongue label. Rocky has restored all of it stitch-for-stitch. The additions from his side are deliberately minimal — a gold PUMA lace keeper across the vamp and custom shoebox packaging. No signature branding elsewhere on the shoe. It's one of the more restrained artist collabs in recent memory. Browse the wider A$AP Rocky archive on Side Kicks.

Design and details

This is a proper archive revival rather than a reinterpretation. Rocky's brief was clear — bring the 1994 Suede back stitch-for-stitch, add nothing that doesn't belong. The result is one of the cleanest artist collab decisions of the year. The shoe reads as vintage, but everything on it is intentional.

Black suede upper with faded finishing

The upper runs in a black suede with the kind of faux-aged distressing Rocky has built into most of his footwear work. The white Formstrip across the side panels is deliberately faded, and the midsole is yellowed to look as though it's aged out of the box. It's a straight-from-1994 aesthetic without needing to actually source vintage pairs.

Retro PUMA logo and 94-specific details

What sets the 1994 Suede apart from every other version is the full retro PUMA logo printed directly onto the quarter panel — no other Suede has it. Rocky has kept it. The longer toe box, heavily padded raw-edge tongue, slimmer tooling shape and original woven tongue label (in white, gold and green) all return exactly as they were in 1994. The gold PUMA debossed branding on the side panel places the Big Cat logo jumping over the wordmark — the '94-specific execution — with 'Suede' removed from the branding.

Gold lace keeper and Rocky touches

Rocky's own additions are limited to two touches. A gold PUMA lace keeper sits across the vamp, styled almost like jewellery, with the PUMA name across it. The Big Cat logo on the heel tab is finished in gold. Rocky's own signature or branding is nowhere to be found on the shoe — a deliberate choice that keeps the archive integrity intact.

Laces and packaging

The shoe ships with oversized white laces that carry the '90s b-boy styling forward, and a custom shoebox designed with Rocky. The oversized lace choice is what shifts the shoe from straight retro into Rocky's world — a small detail that anchors it in the same visual language as his New York-shot Harlem campaign.

The 1994 Suede and A$AP Rocky's New York story

The PUMA Suede first landed at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, but its cultural life really began in New York. The 1994 version arrived at a moment when hip-hop, streetwear and downtown skate culture were all reshaping the city — and the Suede became part of the uniform. It's also tied to Walt 'Clyde' Frazier, whose Clyde silhouette followed the Suede in 1973 with slight tweaks and his own signature added to the gold debossed branding.

Rocky's connection to the shoe is personal. "I remember when my mum bought me my first pair of Suedes," he said on the drop. "Growing up in New York and seeing Walt Clyde Frazier with his style and his PUMA Suedes, they were the shoes." The campaign was shot in Harlem, styled fully in '90s nostalgia, with the shoe placed back in the skate and street context it originally belonged to. It's a proper full-circle moment.

This is also Rocky's first time working on the Suede in a two-year partnership with PUMA that has otherwise focused on the Speedcat and Mostro. Choosing the '94 build for his Suede debut, rather than the standard silhouette, tells you exactly which era of the sneaker he cares about.
